The story behind the brand
My grandfather’s parents were German Immigrants from Saratov, Russia, the descendants of Volga Germans. Johann George Ostermiller, born in 1886, immigrated to America with his brother and sister-in-law in 1907. George worked in sweatshops in New Jersey where he saved money up to send back to Russia for Katharina “Katie” Krueger, the sister of his brother’s wife. They were married in New Jersey in 1914. Working their way across the country they finally landed in Newdale, Idaho where they worked doing whatever they could as laborers until finally purchasing the start of the family farm of 80 acres. Grandpa, John George Ostermiller Jr., was born there in 1920. Both were known by their middle name, “George”. The farm raised mostly potatoes (“spuds” for those in the know), hay and grain with a few milk cows, pigs and beef cattle. The backwards “GO” logo is a digitization of a brand made by one of the original branding irons created with Great-Grandpa's initials that was used for those cattle. One of dad’s cousins has the original branding iron that made this image.
Most of my Dad’s family worked on the farm in their youth, at least for the harvest. To this day, the area schools are released for two weeks every fall to allow kids to help with the harvest. Dad worked during his Jr High and High School years on the farm, full time during several summer. I remember many stories about my Great Grandma, Katie, who was small but full of love and kindness. I remember my Great-Grandfather who died in 1983 at 97 years old.
The oldest great-grandson and grandson with the “Ostermiller” name, I was given the middle name George to honor them. So the brand initials fit. Use of the brand logo is our way to pay tribute to that legacy, their hard work and determination to make something better of their lives. Dad is involved in our small apiary operation and the George and Katie extended family are supportive of us honoring the legacy with the family brand.
